Highland Park Cemetery

Highland Cemetery, the Catholic Addition, also known as Mt. Calvary, and the Highland Park, are now the Municipal Cemeteries of Ravenna, Nebraska. Highland Cemetery is about 5 acres. It was purchased from George Adams in 1888. In 1889, the first burial occurred, which was Charles Smith, son of Erastus and Mary Smith. The monument marking the grave was the first monument in the Ravenna cemetery and it was surrounded by an iron picket fence for protection.

In 1904, approximately 3 acres were sold to Rt. Rev. Richard Scannell by Peter and Adelaida Moritz. It is the Catholic Cemetery and adjoins Highland Cemetery on the North, also known as Mt. Calvary.

In 1915, approximately 10 acres were purchased from Edward and Maria Keaschall for the Highland Park Cemetery that is directly South of the Highland Cemetery. The first burial in this cemetery was in 1928.

Our cemetery rules and regulations have been drawn up to facilitate the work of administration and care of the cemetery in extending to everyone equal and fair treatment and to maintain uniform control as well as the beauty of our cemetery.

1. Cemetery hours are sunrise to sunset.

2. Glass containers and tin cans will not be allowed to remain on gravesites for cut flowers or watering purposes. There will be no planting of trees, shrubs, or flowers in the ground.

3. All pots and urns are to be placed at the side of the memorial marker and not in front of rear for ease of mowing.

4. Grave blankets and/or decorations on top of the grave site are not allowed unless following an interment.

5. Only two shepherd hooks will be allowed to each monument.

6. Flowers or wreaths shall be removed when they become unsightly.

7. The cemetery is not responsible for any lost, misplaced, vandalized or stolen decorations. Any decorations which are not within our guidelines may be removed. The cemetery is not responsible for storing or saving any decorations.

8. Due to insurance concerns, the care of the lots must be done by cemetery employees, or by others approved by the cemetery. Family is responsible to plant grass on top of interment.

9. That all Memorial Day decorations not in permanent containers will be removed by the cemetery on or after June 23.

If you are interested in purchasing a plot or plots, there are lots for sale. A lot consists of 8-10 burial plots. The lots can be broken into a 1/2 lot, 1/4 lot or even single spaces. If there are any other questions, please contact City Hall at (308)452-3273.
